LOS ANGELES — In a night that started cautiously but ended in pure pandemonium, Los Angeles FC delivered a dramatic 2-1 victory over Deportivo Toluca in the first leg of the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals on Wednesday at BMO Stadium. A stoppage-time header from defender Nkosi Tafari, set up by a pinpoint free kick from superstar Son Heung-min, gave the Black & Gold a slender but crucial aggregate lead heading into next week’s return leg in Mexico.
The match kicked off under the lights in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,593, with the stands split roughly 50/50 between passionate LAFC supporters and traveling Toluca fans. The first half was a tense, low-event affair as both sides felt each other out. LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was the hero early, producing a spectacular double-save in the 44th minute to keep the score level and earning Man of the Match honors.
The game exploded to life just six minutes after the restart. In the 51st minute, South Korean icon Son Heung-min threaded a clever pass that Timothy Tillman chested down before unleashing a thunderous long-range volley past Toluca goalkeeper Luis García. The BMO faithful erupted — LAFC had the lead and momentum.
Three minutes later, the party looked ready to double in size. Jacob Shaffelburg redirected a cross from Sergi Palencia at the far post, but after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was chalked off for offside. The frustration was short-lived, however, as Toluca struck back in the 73rd minute. Jesús Angulo pounced on a chance to equalize, giving the visitors a priceless away goal and setting up a nervy final stretch.
With the clock ticking into second-half stoppage time, LAFC earned a free kick in a dangerous area. Son, who finished the night with two assists (and now leads the tournament with six), whipped in a perfect delivery. Rising above the defense, Tafari powered a close-range header into the net in the 91st minute, sending BMO Stadium into absolute delirium.
The win was especially sweet for LAFC, who were without leading scorer Denis Bouanga due to a yellow-card suspension but showed they can go toe-to-toe with back-to-back Liga MX champions. Son’s influence was immense throughout, controlling the tempo and creating both goals.
LAFC now carries a 2-1 advantage into the second leg on Wednesday, May 6, at Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca. While the road will be tough against a formidable Mexican side, the Black & Gold have momentum, home-form confidence, and a one-goal cushion to protect.
For one night at least, BMO Stadium belonged to LAFC — and a late, late hero named Tafari made sure the dream of continental glory stays alive.
