LAFC Stuns Toluca with Late Segura Strike to Secure Crucial 1-0 Win at BMO Stadium

LOS ANGELES — In a match defined by tension, missed chances, and late drama, LAFC defeated Toluca 1-0 on Saturday night at BMO Stadium thanks to a stunning stoppage-time goal from defender Eddie Segura. The Colombian’s curling strike in the 91st minute gave the Black & Gold a vital three points in their Leagues Cup Phase One campaign and left the home crowd of 22,111 roaring.

Coming off a dramatic penalty-shootout victory over Chivas earlier in the week, LAFC needed a regulation win against one of Liga MX’s strongest sides to keep their knockout hopes firmly alive. They got exactly that—in the most dramatic fashion possible.

A Cagey, Scoreless Battle

The contest remained locked at 0-0 for nearly the entire night. Both teams created opportunities, but clear-cut chances were limited. Toluca, who had opened their Leagues Cup account with a convincing win over Seattle Sounders, controlled periods of possession and tested LAFC’s defense. Hugo Lloris and the Black & Gold back line stood firm.

LAFC had their own moments, particularly through Denis Bouanga, who repeatedly threatened but could not find the finishing touch. An early flashpoint came in the opening minutes when a potential penalty for a foul on Son Heung-Min was awarded, only for VAR to overturn the decision. The game settled into a hard-fought, tactical struggle with neither side willing to give an inch.

Substitutions injected fresh energy in the second half. LAFC introduced Eddie Segura and later Jacob Shaffelburg, while Toluca made changes of their own in search of a breakthrough. Still, the scoreboard remained blank as the clock ticked toward 90 minutes, with a penalty shootout for the extra point looking increasingly likely under the tournament’s format.

The Decisive Moment

Then, in the first minute of stoppage time, the breakthrough arrived. Shaffelburg drove down the left and delivered a cross into the box. A Toluca defender headed the ball clear, but it fell invitingly to Segura roughly 23 yards from goal. The veteran defender took one touch and unleashed a curling right-footed shot that bent past a pair of defenders and beyond the diving Hugo González, nestling inside the far post.

BMO Stadium erupted. Segura was immediately mobbed by teammates, including Bouanga, as LAFC celebrated a hard-earned and dramatic victory. The goal proved the difference, securing a clean-sheet win against a high-quality opponent.

What It Means Going Forward

The result lifted LAFC to five points after two matches—two from the Chivas shootout and three from this hard-fought win. The Black & Gold will close Phase One against Querétaro later this week, still very much in the hunt for one of the top-four MLS berths that advance to the knockout stage.

For Toluca, the defeat dropped them to three points after two games and complicated their path. The Diablos Rojos will need a strong result in their final group match to keep their own advancement hopes intact.

Saturday night belonged to Eddie Segura and a resilient LAFC side that found a way when it mattered most. In a tournament that rewards composure and late concentration, the Black & Gold delivered both under the lights of BMO Stadium.
