CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy’s 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup journey ended in frustration Wednesday night at Dignity Health Sports Park, as Deportivo Toluca FC delivered a clinical 3-0 second-leg victory. The result sent the Mexican side through to the semifinals with a commanding 7-2 aggregate scoreline after they had already taken a 4-2 lead in the first leg in Toluca.
Jesús Gallardo gave the visitors the perfect start in the 10th minute, curling a left-footed strike from the edge of the box into the top-left corner after Toluca patiently worked the ball across the top of the area. The early goal left the Galaxy — who needed at least three unanswered goals to advance — shell-shocked and chasing the game from the opening whistle.
Despite controlling 57% of the possession and outshooting Toluca 12-11, the Galaxy created little of substance. Their attacks repeatedly broke down against Toluca’s organized defense and man-marking press, while defensive lapses continued to haunt them.
Paulinho, who had already scored a hat-trick in the first leg, put the tie to bed with two clinical finishes in a six-minute span early in the second half. In the 58th minute, he controlled a pass from Helio Nunes and slotted home into the bottom-right corner. Six minutes later, Nicolás Castro threaded a through ball into the right channel; Paulinho ran onto it and chipped goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski to make it 3-0. The Portuguese forward finished the two-legged tie with five goals, tormenting the Galaxy’s backline throughout.
A crowd of 15,473 — the majority wearing Toluca’s scarlet — turned Dignity Health Sports Park into a de facto away venue. The visiting supporters created a vibrant atmosphere, chanting “Olé” in the closing stages as their team comfortably saw out the result. At full time, pockets of the home crowd voiced their displeasure with chants of “We want better” and “Vanney out.”
Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney acknowledged the performance fell short. “I felt like our guys put in an effort, but we weren’t good enough to win,” Vanney said. “We knew we had to score three goals, and that means a lot of things tactically… We don’t deal with some situations.” He added that the night was a duel-heavy battle in which Toluca simply won more second balls and managed the moments better.
Captain Maya Yoshida, making his 100th appearance for the club across all competitions, and the returning Joseph Paintsil (subbed on in the 67th minute after missing seven matches with injury) were bright spots in an otherwise difficult evening. But the Galaxy’s inability to generate meaningful chances — registering just four shots on target — proved decisive.

With the continental dream over, the Galaxy now shift their full focus back to MLS play. They will look to channel any frustration into a response on the road against FC Dallas this weekend. Toluca, meanwhile, advance as one of the tournament favorites, their attacking depth and defensive discipline on full display over two legs against an MLS side.
For the Galaxy, the night served as a harsh reminder of the gap that still exists against top Liga MX opposition in knockout competition. The Scarlet and Gold will now regroup and refocus on domestic silverware.
