LA Galaxy Lose 3-2 to Chicago Fire FC in Coachella Valley Invitational

The LA Galaxy fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat against Chicago Fire FC in their opening match of the 2026 Coachella Valley Invitational, played at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The preseason encounter featured thrilling end-to-end soccer, dramatic scoring sequences, and a decisive late goal that handed Chicago the victory.

Chicago Fire FC dominated the first half, taking a commanding 2-0 lead into halftime. Hugo Cuypers opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a clinical finish off a clever assist from Philip Zinckernagel. Zinckernagel then added his own goal shortly before the break, striking well to double the Fire’s advantage.

The Galaxy mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, showing strong resilience and attacking flair. Midfielder Gabriel Pec was the catalyst, netting twice—first in the 51st minute and again in the 77th—to pull LA level at 2-2 and breathe new life into their performance.

However, Chicago responded with a crucial late strike. In the 84th minute, Chris Mueller converted a cross from Omari Glasgow to restore the lead and seal the 3-2 win for the Fire, preserving their undefeated start to preseason.

Despite the result, the Galaxy displayed encouraging signs of fight and creativity, particularly in the second half, as both teams ramp up preparations for the upcoming MLS season.
